1. Warming up with your reading tickets, musical-chairs style
  • What do these first-person rewrites help you understand better or differently about a character, a relationship, or a situation?
2. Enjoying a Socratic seminar on The Odyssey, books 13-20

3. Wrapping up with epiphanies, kudos, and lingering questions

HW:
1. Ongoing: Continue drafting your college essay and coming in to conference with me.
  • Essays are due September 16 by 4:00 pm.
2. For Monday:
  • Reread the rest of the books in The Odyssey to prepare for our last Socratic seminar.
  • Prepare a ticket by using any style of reading ticket we've tried so far. Your choice.

  1. Thanks to Parker for scribing the conversation!
“How is the theme of deception exhibited in not only Odysseus but everyone else?”

Deception in Penelope because nobody knows how much she really knows
Deception is evident in everything that Athena does to have control and manipulate every aspect of situations (She is almost deceiving Odysseus into believing that this is his own story)
Everyone character in the novel has an ulterior motive that is glorified throughout the novel

“How does Odysseus disguise on his homecoming affect his outcome and the rest of the story?”

He would have been far too prideful walking back into his kingdom which would have negatively affected him
Is Odysseus wise and clever or just impulsive?
He is impulsive but has enough restraint to execute the plan necessary
Acting out of passion, not impulse

“Does the Odyssey make a statement that discourages war and violence?”
The Odyssey highlights the journey to becoming yourself again after such a difficult war instead of glorifying the war as the Illyaid does

Athena is making Odysseus appearing as either a beggar or god-like. So are they suggesting that he needs to find a way to be in between the lines?

“What is Odysseus' greatest anxiety upon returning home?”
He wants to test everyone as the beggar to see what their true colors are specifically royalty
Can he trust those that he left behind before war to take care of their property
    Has Penelope stayed true?

If these people haven’t been loyal to him is he entitled to justice?
If they are slaves they never really deserved his loyalty in the first place
But in the culture where you do own someone else, you would almost expect loyalty from them
Odysseus killing the slave girls shows how he has been living like close to the Gods

Do you think that Odysseus' struggles were there to humble him before his homecoming?
    Are birds godly or beastly?
Why did Athena continue to have sympathy for Odysseus?
