Gods, Humans, Heroes, and Beasts: August 30, 2019

Focus: How does Odysseus navigate the space between heroes and beasts, and what should we take away from his experiences?

Because our Monday Socratic was short, I will combine Monday with today for your 1st Socratic grade.

Please turn in your poetry responses. :)

1. Warming up with a quick exploration of the Greek Underworld and the strata of gods, humans, and beasts

2. Enjoying a Socratic Seminar on The Odyssey, Books 10, 11, and 12 (and any earlier books)

3. Wrapping up with kudos, epiphanies, and lingering questions

HW:
1. For Wednesday and Thursday: Bring your laptop to class for college essay drafting and revising.

2. For Friday:
  • Reread Chapters 13-20 in The Odyssey to prepare for our one Socratic seminar next week.
  • Prepare a ticket by trying out the following exercise in character empathy: Rewrite one scene from the first-person perspective of a minor character (not Odysseus or Telemachus). You can handwrite or type and print, and it should be about a page.
  • Compose your next poetry response. Instead of a packet, I'd like you to use this website: https://poets.org/poem-a-day and select one of the current or past poems-of-the-day. We're going contemporary!

    Socratic Chapters 10, 11, and 12
    Discussion Notes

Odysseus’ men tapped into their inner beast side, while Odysseus just tries to stay calm to go home
The gods are testing the humans and see if the humans will push that god like area to be “heroes”
When Odysseus falls asleep, what represents that sleep? And is it a sort of curse?
All of the men are powerless to what the gods do, but Odysseus represents the gods because all the humans adore him but at the same time, the gods are testing him if he really knows what what
The morals of the gods are interesting and what their intentions are. It’s difficult to understand how to measure morals in general
What do the gods represent? And what is their specific purpose
Everytime it talked about Athena, it was not seen as a god, it was just that presence of help and wisdom and a guide instead of an actual god
Page 260, line 145 -- if you compare to a spot of wisdom, it's the opposite of that, they didn’t accredit athena
Odysseus represents the bridge between his men and athena, because as the hero, he is able to connect with her and when he is asleep that bridge is gone.
Why does the Gods chose Odysseus and his son? ...Odysseus is targeted by the gods and definitely Poseidon with the dishonor. But athena sees how se can connect to Odysseus and that he did so well in the war and that is why Athena wants to help him
Odysseus is placed at a higher standard and that maybe the gods are threatened by him because he was so brilliant in the war, and they were unsure of what he would do next
Odysseus’ fate is being controlled and that it’s confusing about what control he really has over his life
Odysseus, like many people in today’s culture, test standard and try to challenge authority, so it's always surprising of what he’s going to do
The book mentions “silver” many times speaking of how it is used over and over
Silver, in that time area, could have been very valuable
Page 282, Gold is mentioned in the prophecy and it’s associated with the gods and so maybe silver is the most valuable for the humans, because they are not worthy of gold
Also, 282, in the underworld scene, “you have to suffer, but you can get home if you control your urges and the urges of your men too”, here’s your fate, but you have to make good choices
Odysseus just wants to get home, but the people he’s around kind of ruin it for him
When Circe turns them into pigs, and when Odysseus learns of this, he stands up like a hero, and we can all relate to him with our best parts and our worst parts, we all have our on quests
The gods also have their own imperfection alike to Odysseus, they are in much relation and have similar qualities
Posiedon is vengeful towards Odysseus and has no sympathy towards him because he’s an upset parent about Odysseus who stabbed his son
Odysseus is always described as “god-like” and he’s supposed to be our hero, but he doesn’t do many god-like things and he does many things that are unbearable
He is the man of “twists and turns” he’s very unpredictable and torn between how he’s going to act
Hospitality is a repetitive topic in the book, because we see Odysseus being going to all these new homes and the hosts are not very good at all, like the lotus eaters want them to stay there forever
“Nothing is as it should be”
